Roads Policing Unit Statistics

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to use care, caution and courtesy on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and those traveling on motorcycles to fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, March 2nd – Monday, March 9th 2009 there were:

* Reported Injury Collisions = 14
* Reported Damage Only Collisions = 31
* Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 7
* Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 21
* Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 1, Hamilton parish = 2, Devonshire = 2, Pembroke = 9, Paget = 2, Warwick = 2 , Southampton = 1 and Sandy’s parish = 2.

March 9 - Daily Report

Injury RTC - Around 2:25pm on Sunday, Police attended a reported single vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury on Middle Road in Southampton near the junction with Lukes Pond Road. It appears that a rental cycle was traveling east on Middle Road when the rider, a 39 year old Florida man, lost control and rode over an embankment. The visitor sustained back injuries and a suspected broken left ankle. He was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. The rental cycle received moderate damage. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Around 2:25pm on Sunday, Police attended a reported single vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury on Middle Road in Southampton near the junction with Lukes Pond Road. It appears that a rental cycle was traveling east on Middle Road when the rider, a 39 year old Florida man, lost control and rode over an embankment. The visitor sustained back injuries and a suspected broken left ankle. He was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. The rental cycle received moderate damage. March 8 - Weekend Report

Injury RTC - Around 11:05pm on Saturday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury at the junction of Middle Road and Stadium Lane in Warwick involving an auxiliary cycle and a car. It appears that the auxiliary cycle was traveling west on Middle Road and the car was traveling in the opposite direction when the vehicles collided. The rider of the cycle, a 17 year old Pembroke woman, sustained a broken right ankle as well as cuts to her hands and legs. She was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. The driver of the car, a 20 year old Sandy’s parish man, was not injured.

Around 11:05pm on Saturday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury at the junction of Middle Road and Stadium Lane in Warwick involving an auxiliary cycle and a car. It appears that the auxiliary cycle was traveling west on Middle Road and the car was traveling in the opposite direction when the vehicles collided. The rider of the cycle, a 17 year old Pembroke woman, sustained a broken right ankle as well as cuts to her hands and legs. She was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. The driver of the car, a 20 year old Sandy’s parish man, was not injured. The car received front end damage while the auxiliary cycle was extensively damaged. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Burglary - Around 5:10pm on Thursday, Police received a report of a burglary at a Rosemont Avenue, Pembroke residence. The complainant stated that sometime between 7:30am and 5pm that day, an unknown culprit gained entry into her home while it was unoccupied. The culprit stole a quantity of jewelry. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Around 3:35pm on Thursday, Police received a report of a burglary at a Fritholme Gardens, Paget residence. The complainant stated that sometime between 8:45am and 3:30pm that day, an unknown culprit gained entry into her apartment while it was unoccupied. The culprit stole a quantity of jewelry.

Handbag Snatch - Around 6:50pm on Wednesday, Police received a report of a handbag snatch on Angle Street in Pembroke. It appears that around 6:30pm that day the victims, a 37 year old Pembroke man and a 28 year old Pembroke woman, were on an auxiliary cycle traveling east on Angle Street when an unknown man on a motorcycle rode past and grabbed the pillion passenger’s handbag. As a result the victims and the auxiliary cycle they were on fell to the ground while the suspect made good his escape with the handbag. It does not appear that the 37 year old man (rider) or the 28 year old woman (pillion passenger) were injured.

Around 6:50pm on Wednesday, Police received a report of a handbag snatch on Angle Street in Pembroke. It appears that around 6:30pm that day the victims, a 37 year old Pembroke man and a 28 year old Pembroke woman, were on an auxiliary cycle traveling east on Angle Street when an unknown man on a motorcycle rode past and grabbed the pillion passenger’s handbag. As a result the victims and the auxiliary cycle they were on fell to the ground while the suspect made good his escape with the handbag. It does not appear that the 37 year old man (rider) or the 28 year old woman (pillion passenger) were injured. The handbag contained a cellular phone, wallet and personal items. The male suspect is described as wearing an orange sweat top and jeans. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
